First Aid in Cases of Drowning:
In the event of exposure or seeing a drowning person, the rescuer must be proficient in swimming and water rescue.
To remove the drowning person from the water, specific methods are taught to the rescue specialist.
After removing the drowning person from the water, first aid is administered until the medical team arrives, using the following steps:
- If breathing is present, the drowning person is placed in the recovery position. This is done by placing the mouth down to drain fluids from the airway, placing the chin upward, stabilizing the drowning person's body, and ensuring the airway is kept open.
- If there is no breathing, immediately begin mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing, closing the victim's nose and monitoring the drowning person's pulse.
- If there is no pulse and no breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is performed by first ensuring that the airway is open, meaning there are no secretions or any foreign body that could obstruct breathing.
- Next, in case of loss of consciousness, the victim's head should be grasped from the area under the chin and forehead, and tilted back slightly, to ensure that the airway is open (the airway is blocked if the head is tilted upward, as a result of loss of muscle tone and a drop in the base of the tongue).
- Then, approach the victim, with your ear close to his mouth, while looking towards his chest. You can also place your hand on the chest, to check the integrity of the airway through hearing, touch and sight.
